Russ Pennell not a candidate

Arizona is having a nice season, but that does not mean Russ Pennell should be considered.

The expectations going into the season were not very high for the Wildcats and rightfully so. However, with two weeks to go in the regular season, the UA seems to be in good shape to make the tournament.

Thus, it is not surprising to see that fans are constantly asking about the possibility of removing the interim label from Russ Pennell.

That's not happening.

Frankly it shouldn't. While he has done a nice job, there are many more reasons why he should not get the job instead of reasons why. For starters, you could make the argument that the team has been disappointing.

Arizona should have at least three more wins, but there were numerous adjustments and questionable substitutions that have frustrated plenty of people. Yes, players are to blame. however, the head coach puts those players in certain situations.

Next, Pennell has no recruiting power. There is absolutely no draw to his name and if you had the choice between Ben Howland, Tim Floyd, etc, who would you choose?

We have said numerous times that Arizona needs to aim big, but even if it settles for a mid major type coach, there are beter options out there than Pennell.

Thankfully for Arizona fans, it seems the administration knows this. Pennell has done a good job but there is a difference between almost meeting expectations and exceeding them.
