While Arizona fans would love to see the Wildcats defeat Arizona State, it really should not matter. Arizona has done enough to make the tournament either way.
If you take a look at the mock brackets going around, there are a handful of teams that the UA is supposedly competing against for a tournament bid. However, when you put the resumes against each other, the Wildcats definitely deserve to be in.
South Carolina is one team that Arizona is competing with and while a 21-8 record is impressive, the competition SC did it against is not.
Carolina has not beaten one team that is projected to make the tournament. The only OOC team with an RPI above 104 that SC faced was Clemson, and the Gamecocks lost by 11. In order to make the tournament, a team should have to play difficult competition.
San Diego State is another squad and the Wildcats have a head to head win over the Aztecs. In addition, the SOS is 68 with the OOC schedule being weak. Yes, SDSU played Arizona State and Arizona, but the Aztecs also lost both games.
New Mexico may be one of the hottest teams in the country, but it is hard to ignore the bad losses. Yes, the Lobos have won 8 of the past 9 games, but earlier in the season, UNM lost to Central Florida, Drake, and Texas Tech.
Simply put, it is hard to ignore those losses. New Mexico definitely has a couple of qualities wins, but in the end, the bad losses should hold more weight.
Penn State is yet another team that many people have in and we truly do not understand why. The OOC schedule consisted of two teams with a RPI lower than 157 and Penn State lost both.
There are a handful of quality wins, but a loss against Iowa in the last game of the season is definitely a negative. We could see Penn State becoming a problem should it win a game or two in the Big 10 tournament, but the RPI and SOS make it hard for us to believe that Penn State should be in over the Wildcats.
Win or lose, Arizona deserves a bid
