Cats add defensive tackle

The Cats have a huge need for defensive tackles and have added a quality player. He may have missed his entire senior season, but those who know about Cedric Cofer, feel he is a great get for the Cats.

Cedric Cofer was attracting a lot of major interest before an injury kept him from playing his senior year. Before getting hurt, all of the Texas schools and a number of other quality programs were in on Cofer. The Cats remained loyal to him and the interest was appreciated by Cofer.

"They stuck with me when a lot of schools disappeared," Cofer said. "That was definitely a reason I liked Arizona."

Academics played the biggest role in Cofer's decision. Cofer hopes to pursue a degree in secondary education and liked what he saw in the department at Arizona.

"First and most important is education," Cofer said. "They do a good job in graduating players."

The need for quality defensive tackles was another reason Cofer chose Arizona. With just four returning tackles, Cofer sees a chance to compete right away, which is extra special since he missed the entire season.

"Yes, I'm excited about an opportunity to get in and hopefully play," said Cofer.

Despite a lack of tackles, Cofer knows he can't just stroll in and expect to play.

"It will take a lot of work to come in and compete," said Cofer. "All I want is a chance."

It will take even more work for Cofer than most players. He hasn't run since the injury and is out of shape. He should be cleared to run in early February and can't wait to get to work. At 6-4 and 300 pounds, he's at the weight he wants to play at, but he needs to transform some fat to muscle.

"I want to get solid," Cofer admitted. "I need to add more muscle."
