Mahaffey a Wildcat

The Wildcats have had a big weekend in recruiting big men. The Wildcats added two offensive line commitments over the weekend and have added one more today. Big Texan John Mahaffey decided to come west to the Pac-10 to play his college football.

John Mahaffey, a 6-5, 320-pound offensive lineman from Tyler (Texas) Robert E. Lee has committed to Arizona. Mahaffey tripped to Tucson back in December and will cancel his last two visits he had set to Rice and Baylor.

"There were just so many positives about Arizona," Mahaffey's mother told PacWestFootball. "John did a lot of research and couldn't find anything bad about Arizona. It's a big school in the Pac-10 and strong in his area of study which will be Pre-Law. He loved the warm weather and feels there's a chance he could play early there.

Mahaffey is a serious student who scored a 1260 on his SAT and should graduate near the top of his class.

"The coaches talked to John about playing center and he was excited about that. He loved the football facilities and they have so many players from Texas already on the team that it will be easy for him to adapt there. In fact, we heard a lot of the parents of the players from Texas even get together and go to the games as a big group.

Mahaffey took an early visit to Alabama and attracted interest from LSU, but the Tide filled their allotment of offensive line scholarships and neither school offered Mahaffey. Despite garnering a host of accolades he started to look at some smaller programs.

"He had a visit set with this weekend with Rice and then Baylor the following weekend but John just felt he was ready to make his decision. He actually took an unofficial trip to Baylor this past Saturday and liked it there but felt Arizona was the best overall fit for him."

Mahaffey has very quick feet and has played with a number of quality linemen. Three of his offensive line teammates he played with his junior year signed with Division I schools last year and according to recruiting analyst Max Emfinger, Mahaffey could "be better than any of the other three." Emfinger has descried Mahaffey as a "diamond in the rough" and named him to his Texas Super Team All-State team.

Mahaffey was the best offensive lineman in the tough District 12-5A this year and based upon his excellent play, he was selected to the Sportswriters 5A All-State Team.
