News, notes and stats: Cats ruin Bruins

WESTWOOD, Calif. - In a place where losing is not accepted, the UCLA Bruins are not only losing, they are losing in ways that fans are not used to. Not only did the Cats sweep in LA, but they handed the Bruins their worst loss in the history of Pauley Pavilion.

CAN'T BUY A BASKET
The Cats had one stretch in the first half where they went 5:16 without a field goal. Thankfully, the Bruins managed just one and only outscored the Cats 2-1 during the shooting drought.

SNAPPING THE STREAK
Before Saturday's win, the Wildcats had dropped two straight at Pauley Pavilion. It is the Wildcats' 10th win all-time in Pauley against the Bruins. They are 10-25 in Westwood.

BAD START
The Bruins 4-9 start is their worst since 1945-46 when they started the season 2-10. That season they lost games to Pepperdine, San Diego, Cal and traditional college basketball powerhouses San Diego Navy TC, Santa Ana Army Air Base and 20th Century Fox.

NEW LOW
With their loss to Arizona, the Bruins have lost eight games at Pauley, the most they have ever lost at home.

JANOU WHO?
Little used Janou Rubin hit all three of the Bruins three-point shots. Usually deadly Jason Kapono was 0-1 from beyond the arc and just 2-7 overall.

SWEEP LA
The Cats swept the two LA schools on the road for the first time in 10 years. They swept both USC and UCLA at McKale last year, but dropped both in Los Angeles.

VICTORY CIGAR
Jason Ranne entered the game with 3:04. It was a season high in minutes, but not a career high. Twice last season he logged four minutes.

COACHES' CORNER
Three former coaches were in attendance. John Wooden, Gene Bartow and Bill Frieder were all in attendance.

STUDENT DRESS CODE
A large contingent in the student section came dressed alike. They all sported white, ‘wife-beater', tank top undershirts and baby blue, knit stocking caps.

EVEN THE PA ANNOUNCER WAS OFF
Things are so bad that the Bruins' PA announcer referred to Jason Gardner as "Jalani Gardner".
