Arizona lays an egg

Arizona lost 24-16 to Cal Saturday night in a game filled with disappointment.

Shane Vereen took the snap and went 61 yards for the touchdown to give Cal the eight point lead.

It was an indication of how the night went for the Wildcats.

Arizona failed to make the big stop or convert on offense as they lost 24-16 at Cal.

Despite not being able to get any consistent offense going, Arizona took a 16-15 lead on an eight-yard touchdown pass from Nick Foles to A.J. Simmons early in the fourth quarter.

However, sensing a worn down defensive line, Jeff Tedford and Cal went to the ground to march the ball downfield and get the go-ahead field goal.

Arizona had a chance for a field goal that would have given the Wildcats the lead, but a Foles pass was deflected and the quarterback chose to throw it again, which resulted in a major penalty.

The play by Foles basically ended any chance of winning the UA had, as it forced Arizona into a 4th and long situation that was too difficult to obtain.

The UA defense played relatively well, although it failed to stop Cal on numerous occasions. In fact, it seemed that every big play went in Cal's favor and, in the end, it resulted in Arizona losing.

Considering what was at stake, it was disappointing to see the Wildcats come out as they did.

Arizona had a great chance to make some noise and seemed to be rattled by the major situation in front of it.

With a chance at the Pac-10 title still available, Arizona is going to have to learn how to win the big games.
