2003 Recruiting: Linebackers

Arizona returns a very deep unit, but lost three starters. The Cats will not easily replace Lance Briggs, Ray Wells or Spencer Larsen, but have four players on the roster who have made starts. Both recruits could be a factor this season.

Key loses: Ray Wells, Lance Briggs, Spencer Larsen (Mormon Mission)
Key returners: Joe Siofele RS Sr.; Matt Molina RS Sr.; Pat Howard RS Jr.; Kirk Johnson Jr.; Akin Akininny RS Fr.; John McKinney RS Fr.

Dane Krogstad
LB, 6-2, 220
El Molino HS, Forestville, CA
Rank: TE #56, 2-stars

Great athlete who has played tight end, wide receiver, running back, linebacker and safety in high school. Although many consider him a top TE prospect, it appears as if he will get his start at linebacker for the Wildcats. Would like to play early but could very well redshirt in an effort to ad size and speed. Chose Arizona over Cal, Oregon and Oregon State.
"Most likely linebacker is where I'll start at," Krogstad said. "I would like to play early if I can but if I have to red-shirt, I have no problem with that either."
2003 Role: Krogstad will have every opportunity to break into the line-up, but a redshirt season is probably more likely.
Mackovic says: "He has a lot of ties to Tucson. He is a really good athlete. He played tight end, but we project him as a linebacker."

Marquell Stinson
LB, 6-3, 235
Fresno City College/Tulare Western HS, Tulare, CA
Rank: JC 2-stars

Big, fast linebacker who should come in right away and add depth to the linebacking corps. Was named to the Central Valley All-Conference team this past season. Arizona coaches like his pursuing style of play. He had two interceptions for 37 yards for the Rams in 2002. Has to finish the semester at Fresno City College before transferring to Arizona in the fall. Also looked at Iowa State and West Virginia.
"People are surprised," Stinson said. "Normally when you see guys with my size they are plugging up holes. People forget about my speed."
2003 Role: Stinson will be counted on to contribute this season. The big, fast linebacker should provide experience and depth to the unit.
Mackovic says: "We needed help at linebacker. He comes from a good, solid program. He is a junior college player, so he will be here in the fall, and his age and experience will pay off."
