Recruiting Update

With a few days off before Saturday's game with ASU, the Arizona coaching staff thought it was time to go see a few of its 2003 recruits, plus a couple of players it will recruit for the future of Wildcat Basketball. To cover as much ground as possible, Lute Olson headed in one direction, Josh Pastner in another.

Olson grabbed a flight to Philadelphia to get a late-season look at the nation's top-rated point guard, Mustafa Shakur. Shakur, a 6-3 playmaker from Wynnwood (Friends), Pa., signed a Letter-of-Intent to play for the Wildcats next season, but Olson wants to see how Jason Gardner's replacement has progressed since the 2002 summer camps.

While Olson was in Philadelphia, Josh Pastner traveled in Houston where he checked in on Ndudi Ebi, the top-rated power forward in the Class of 2003. Ebi, like Shakur, has signed his Letter-of-Intent and will join the Wildcats next season.

While in Houston, Pastner also made last-minute plans for Jawann McClellan to make his official campus visit the weekend of March 7 when Arizona plays Oregon at McKale Center. McClellan, who is averaging 29 ppg, should be ranked as one of the top two or three two-guards in the nation when the 2003 summer camps get started.

Also coming in the same weekend as McClellan is Nic Wise, a 5-10 point guard from Katy (Cinco Ranch), Tex. Wise is one of the top players at any position in the Class of 2005. He's friends with McClellan and will make an "unofficial" visit the same weekend.

Wise's father, Greg, is the head coach at Hightower HS in Sugarland, Tex. Hightower is the No. 1 team in the state.

With the transfer of Wil Bynum to Georgia Tech, Arizona has another scholarship to offer to a player from the high school class of 2003 or 2004. The Wildcat coaching staff will not give anymore scholarships to the 2003 class and could decide to offer only the McClellan scholarship in the Class of 2004. In other words, the UA might just wait on Wise.

If Arizona does pursue a point guard from the next class, '04 prospects Sebastian Telfair and Sean Livingston could be at the top of the list.

Pastner will leave for Grand Rapids, Mich., Tuesday. While there Pastner will see Kirk Walters, a 6-10 center/power forward who plays for South Christian HS, Arizona's third commit from the Class of '03. The South Christian Sailors, ranked No. 1 in the state of Michigan, take on Caladonia in a regular season game Tuesday night.
