Pastner on Kirk Walters

On Wednesday, Arizona assistant coach Josh Pastner made a trip Grand Rapids, Michigan, to watch South Christian High School, anchored by Arizona signee Kirk Walters.

"He's a lot like Channing Frye," Pastner said. "He's got a great jump hook, and he can hit the jumper."

Walters has progressed a great deal from a season ago, when the Arizona staff offered him a scholarship. When the UA first saw Walters he was an unknown player, but since his commitment to Arizona, he has stepped up his game and made strides to improve in all areas.

The coaching staff was most concerned about Walters' build. The 6-11 center is slender, but Arizona Coach Lute Olson says he has added 20 pounds.

"He looks good," Pastner confirmed. "He not going to be a guy who ever reaches 350, but he's definitely going to get strong."

South Christian is the No. 1 ranked team in Michigan. As a result, it's loaded with talent, so Walters' statistical accomplishments do not coincide with his on-court abilty. Still, he has been a pivotal contributor on both ends of the court.

"When he's on the floor he's all business," Pastner said. "Off the floor he's a great kid and a nice person."

Pastner says Walters is getting great instruction from his high school coach, which will be a significant benefit upon his arrival in Tucson next season.

"His timing on his shot block is awesome," Pastner said. "It's the little stuff that make Walters so good."
