Tourney Watch: A-10 and Atlantic Sun

It may still be February, but we're taking a look at the NCAA Tournament. Cat Tracks analyzes the teams that will figure heavily in the selection process for the field of 65. Some are locks, while others need to get to work. In the second installment we take a look at the underrated Atlantic-10 and the wide-open Atlantic Sun Conference.

All records and rankings are accurate at the time the story was published.

Atlantic 10 (3)

The A-10 has three very good teams and not much else. Temple is down which left the door open for some new teams to make an impact.

Xavier (19-4, 10-1)
RPI: 21
Key Players: F David West, G Romain Sato
Good Wins: Purdue, Cincinnati, Creighton, Dayton
Good Losses: Stanford, Mississippi State, Alabama
Bad Losses: Richmond
Outlook: Xavier is in. The Musketeers have a number of good wins and their losses have come against quality opponents. They started the season slow, but have been playing great basketball as of late.

Dayton (19-4, 11-1)
RPI: 20
Key Players: G Brooks Hall, F Keith Walekowski
Good Wins: Marquette
Good Losses: Duke, Xavier
Bad Losses: Miami (OH), Saint Louis
Outlook: Dayton is all but assured of a spot in the Dance. They have a great RPI despite only having one quality win.

St. Joseph's (18-4, 8-3)
RPI: 29
Key Players: G Delonte West, G Jameer Nelson
Good Wins: Boston College, Gonzaga
Good Losses: Dayton
Bad Losses: Pacific, George Washington
Outlook: The Hawks are going to be tough to keep out of the NCAA Tournament as well. Baring a big collapse, St. Joe's will be in. They lack a very good win and a loss to Pacific never looks good.

Rhode Island (15-8, 7-5)
RPI: 71
Key Players: G Dustin Hellenga, G Brian Woodward
Good Wins: USC, St. Joe's, Providence
Good Losses: Pitt, Xavier, Kent State
Bad Losses: Buffalo, St. Boniventure
Outlook: The only thing keeping these guys in their record. The Rams have a couple of good wins, but too many bad losses have their RPI too low to get in without a A-10 Tournament championship.

Atlantic Sun (1)

This conference has a pair of decent teams, but only the tournament champion will get in.

Troy State (19-5, 10-2)
RPI: 85
Key Players: G Ben Fletcher, G Rob Lewin
Good wins: Arkansas
Good Losses: Auburn, Georgia Tech
Bad Losses: Central Florida, Mercer
Outlook: The class of the conference, they will be the favorite in the conference tournament. Despite a great record, they have no shot at an At-Large

Mercer (18-5, 10-2)
RPI: 114
Good Wins: Troy State
Good Losses: Florida State, Iowa State
Bad Losses: Harvard
Outlook: Mercer has played well, but despite an 18-win season, they will need to win the tournament to get in.
