When Arizona hired Frank Scelfo to be the quarterbacks coach, it did so with the intention of improving the position.
Now it seems it may have been the start of a quarterback controversy.
Although there have been some differing quotes, it seems that Matt Scott will be given every opportunity to be the starter, despite the fact that Nick Foles was relatively successful last season.
Arizona fans fell in love with Foles, as he was able to step in and be effective right away. Although he struggled a bit towards the end of the season and was terrible against Nebraska, Foles had the type of season that fans and coaches can be happy with while showing plenty of room for improvement.
Scott on the other hand was given an opportunity and failed to do much with it. Make no mistake about it, he was indeed the better practice player, although the margin is debatable.
Now that we enter practice again, Scott is likely going to make a good impression. The key here is that Scelfo has been working with him in order to improve his throwing motion, among other things.
It will be interesting to see how Scott progresses now that Scelfo has basically made it his mission to make him good enough to see time.
In fact, it brings up the question: What happens if Scelfo's coaching improves Scott to the point where the coaching staff once again feels comfortable putting him out there as the starter?
At this point, Foles is certainly the favorite. However, he was not impressive enough to the point where the UA would not consider some healthy competition.
It is Mike Stoops' job to put Arizona in the best position to win and if Scelfo, who knows plenty about quarterbacks, decides that Scott is the player that does that, it is going to be difficult for Stoops to deny it.
While we feel that Foles is definitely the favorite to be the starter to start the season, we also get the feeling that Scelfo talking about the quarterback competition is a bit more than a smokescreen.
Both players have a certain set of skills that make them dangerous and, in an ideal world, both will have an opportunity to show those skills in a real game situation.
