News, notes and stats: Cats over Cal

The Cats are the only Pac-10 team in two seasons to beat Cal at Haas Pavilion. The Cats did it both seasons and are still undefeated in conference road games. The Cats can wrap up the Pac-10 regular season crown with a win on Saturday at Stanford. These and other stats and notes below…

FAST START PT. 1
The Cats began the game making nine of their first 11 shots, including their first four three-pointers and their first five free throws.

FAST START PT.2 & 3
Luke Walton hit his first six shots and did not miss until midway in the second half. Salim Stoudamire hit his first four three-point attempts, which came in the game's first 5:51. Both scored 20 points on 7-9 shooting.

NOT SO SMART KIDS
Cal bills itself as the most academically honored state funded institution, but they must not teach spelling. One member of the band had a sign that read, "Coach OlsEn my trombone is smarter than your team." I guess his trombone knew it was spelled O-L-S-O-N, but didn't feel like telling him.

1,000 POINT CLUB
Jason Gardner is just six points shy of 1,000 in Pac-10 play.

LITTLE MAN DOES IT AGAIN
Despite being one of the two smallest players on the court, Gardner led all players in rebounds. He and Cal's Joe Shipp each had seven boards. It is the fourth time he has led or tied for the team lead in rebounds.

MORE MILESTONES
Late in the first half Jason Gardner passed Sean Elliot for first place on the Wildcats' all-time minutes played list. Elliot held the record with 4,499 minutes played. Gardner has now played 4,523 minutes.

STREAKS
The loss snaps Cal's 17-game home win streak, which was the 7th longest in NCAA.

ROAD WARRIORS
Cats are now 8-0 on the road in Pac-10 play and 10-1 overall away from McKale Center.

HOT SHOOTING
The Cats shot 52.0% from the field, but may want to consider shooting outside more often. Arizona actually shot slightly better, 52.6%, from behind the arc.

SERIES OF LATE
The Cats have won 14 of the last 16 against the Bears. Their past two victories at Haas Pavilion are the only ones suffered by the Bears at home over the past two seasons.

CAL AGAINST THE BEST
Cal is now 2-22 all-time against No. 1 ranked teams. They beat No. 1 UCLA 85-70 on Jan. 30, 1994 and beat Cincinnati 77-69 in the 1960 Final Four. Two other times the Cats beat Cal while the Wildcats were the top-ranked team in the land.

NEAT TRADITION
Cal's Straw Hat Band enters the arena playing a fight song and marches around the court until the entire band surrounds the Bear players as they warm up. After finishing the tune the band and crowd do a chant before heading to their seats.

FACES IN THE CROWD
Seen at Haas Pavilion, former Cal point guard Kevin "KJ" Johnson, former Cat Tom Tolbert, singer Huey Lewis and two of Luke Walton's brothers.
