The scrimmage may have ended a little early for Arizona on Saturday, but it was very telling of what was on display through most of Fall Camp.
There are high expectations this season for the Wildcats, but in order to reach their goals there are a few questions that need to be answered. Here are a select few concerns that must be addressed for UA to compete for a Rose Bowl.
-Can the defense come together in time for conference play?
There is no secret that the defense is struggling. Outside of the defensive ends and cornerbacks, there is plenty of widespread concern. The linebackers are inexperienced; the safeties are talented but unproven and while the defensive tackles have plenty of talent, there was an obvious problem stopping the run up the middle. If Arizona can come together as a unit on defense, then this team will win a lot of games
-Can Nick Foles progress into an NFL-caliber quarterback?
Sure, this may be a lot to ask, but if UA wants to play with the big boys, Foles has to elevate his game and perform on a more consistent basis. He was sharp through the first portion of Pac-10 play last year, but sputtered often afterwards. In his defense, it was his first year starting and it was only his sophomore season. Given how he has looked so far in camp, everything is on track for Foles to have a gigantic season.
-Will the running backs stay healthy?
Last year, Nic Grigsby, Keola Antolin and Greg Nwoko all battled injuries on a weekly basis it seemed. While UA has both Daniel Jenkins and Kylan Butler waiting in the wings to make an impact, the Wildcats are going to need their most experienced runners in order to control the clock and keep the defense honest. Without them it will be very tough to challenge for the conference crown.
-Will the offensive line overcome injuries?
The offensive line is already battling the injury bug at both guard positions, but has looked like an improving unit in the last week or two. These was plenty of change along the line this year and the success of the offense is going to be determined by just how well the line holds up for Foles. IF players like Jovon Hayes and Chris Putton are able to elevate their performances, then the line will be great. If not, then it's going to be difficult to get the interior running game going and that will make it tougher for the passing game.
