The season starts in a week and Arizona is still trying to get its defense to come together in time for the start of the college football season. Throughout the course of Fall Camp, one constant theme has been the disappointment of the defense.
Stoops area of expertise is on the defensive side of the ball and it's alarming to hear him lack confidence in the group.
But this is nothing new to the Wildcats.
There has been significant turnover on the defensive side of the ball in the past and the unit always seems to find away to jell together. The difference this year is that Stoops doesn't seem to have the confidence in his defense heading into the season as he did in those previous years. There has been a glaring weakness at linebacker and several other positions are breaking in new starters.
Many fans are confident that the Wildcats will come together when it matters and the first two games of the season provide UA with a chance to improve before powerhouse Iowa comes to town.
If the Wildcats can continue to grow and develop on the defensive side of the ball then they should be more than ready to compete for the Pac-10 title. But if they stay where they currently are, it's hard to imagine them being able to beat out teams like Stanford, Oregon State and Oregon.
The Pac-10 is full of teams with offensive firepower and while Arizona is supposed to bring one of the best offenses to the table, it's going to need to score 35-to-40 points per game each week in order to win a lot of games if the defense doesn't improve fast.
In the past, Stoops' defenses have been able to come together during the season. The UA head coach has a knack for building his squad into a defense that tends to be one of the better ones in the Pac-10.
If he is able to do that by the time the tough matchups hit, UA could very well be in contention for the conference crown.
