Every college coach finds himself managing injuries during fall camp and two-a-day practices, it appears that Hugh Freeze at Arkansas State University is no exception.
Several bodies were out of practice today, something the first year coach feels is a problem at every campus in the country this time of year.
"We have too many guys on the sidelines," Freeze said. "I hat that part of this game, we are a little banged up, no one in the country is immune to that."
Speaking of injuries sixth year senior Tom Castilaw missed the second half of practice with a leg issue.
"Tom has a strained ligament," Freeze said. "Doesn't appear to be anything major. He said he could have gone, but we didn't push it."
Castilaw's presence on the offensive line is critical, he is the leader of this unit and with four new starters, those young guys rely on him making line calls and giving them advise and knowledge.
Wednesday's practice had a couple of competition periods, something that Freeze felt his team rallied around.
"Our team definitely enjoyed the competition," Freeze said. "Both the offense and defense had their moments during these periods."
This included a goal line scrimmage that drew praised from Freeze on both sides of the ball.
"I thought it was very physical," Freeze said. "I wanted to see how Darion Griswold would perform in the goal line package. I wanted to see if he would be aggressive or timid down there. From everything we could see, he definitely wasn't timid."
Freeze also had praise for the goal line defensive package that Dave Womack has installed.
"The defense really did a great job with their red zone pass defense," Freeze said. "They made it tough to throw the ball down there."
Freeze also praised the play of the defensive line again on Wednesday.
"That group is doing a great job of getting some tip passes," Freeze said. "(Chris) Kiffin really stresses that and it's working. Our defense is all about creating turnovers, they got a couple of picks."
Freeze was also pleased with his offensive unit when they turned up the pace on their fast break offense.
"When we went our fastest pace we gave the defense some problems," Freeze said. "I was really pleased on how we executed the offense."
Walk-on quarterback Clayton Davis has been moved from quarterback to tight end. Baylor Winston has been taken off the 105 due to having to have knee surgery. Freeze has brought in Clay Hart from Hoxie to the roster.
Running back Competition
"It's going to be a tough competition," Freeze said. "You will see all four of them play a lot. Who ever named the starter isn't important to me, I'm sure it is to them."
NIck Helms (hamstring), Brandon Joiner sat out some of today's practice, along with several others that has been out earlier.
