Arkansas State has completed it's first six weeks of the season, it's time for their report card, grading each position.
The Red Wolves have done better than a lot of people thought they would, Arkansas State is currently 4-2 overall and undefeated in conference play with a 2-0 mark.
Head Football Coach Hugh Freeze has said on several occasions that he expects a lot of his players and always pushes to get the very best out of each player.
AStateNation will give you our thoughts on the grades so far this season.
It's very obvious that this defensive unit is so much better than it was a year ago.
Veteran Defensive Coordinator Dave Wommack was a home run hire for Head Coach Hugh Freeze.
Wommack doesn't get rattled and has taken basically the same players from last year's squad and made them one of the top defensive units in the Sun Belt and in the Top 40 nationally.
Defensive Line: This is perhaps the most talented group of young men on this team. Brandon Joiner, Dorvus Woods, Elroy Brown, Amos Draper, Jeremy Gibson, and Tim Starson. Sacks are up this season, pressure from the defensive line has improved and has caused opponents fits.
Linebackers: This group is solid in talent and has great potential to be great on the field. Senior linebacker DeMario Davis hasn't had a break out season as expected but has been consistent. Junior Nathan Herrold is having a great season so far, he is showing no signs of a knee injury that ended his sophomore season early. Qushaun Lee is having a great season and Najel Byrd is getting better each week.
Defensive Backs: I thought from day 1 that this group was playing more physical and aggressive than in the past. Major problem with this group is the fact that they give up too many big plays. There are some bright spots at this position, A. J. Hills is having a great season despite having a broken hand and Kelcie McCray is definitely a strength of the team.
Coaching Staff: This group is solid, the energy that defensive line coach Chris Kiffin and linebacker coach Tom Allen brings is instrumental to their improvement. Wommack has done wonders with this group. According to Ryan Aplin, Wommack brings pressure from so many directions it's hard for an offense to tell and stop their attacking style defense.
Punters GRADE: B+
