Hugh Freeze has said all week that he didn't want to talk about becoming bowl eligible until they took care of business against North Texas.
After his team handily defeated North Texas 37-14 Freeze was asked can we talk about being bowl eligible now?
"You guys can talk about it," Freeze said. "Our team still has a lot of work to do. We are just aren't going to talk about it, we are going to enjoy this one tonight and then get ready to go play at a place that we have never won at before."
Arkansas State has never won at FAU, a fact that Freeze is very aware of. It's also very evident that Freeze has bigger plans for his team.
"I want us to take care of us," Freeze said. "Our focus is figuring out how to win at a place that as a school we have never won at. I don't want to get caught up talking about going to a bowl game. There is no guarantees that you get to go to a bowl game with just six wins."
Instead of worrying about winning six games, Freeze wants his team to expect more of themselves and focus on their ultimate goal.
Junior quarterback Ryan Aplin agreed with his head coach, when asked about being bowl eligible.
"Our goal is to be Sun Belt Champions," Aplin said. "If we accomplish that goal, the other will take care of itself. We have to get ready to go on the road and win another Sun Belt game, another step for us to reach our goal."
Don't misunderstand, Freeze is very happy with his team's 6-2 and 4-0 start in Sun Belt action.
"It feels great," Freeze said. "I said last week and I will say it again we have a lot of guarded optimism. Success can be your enemy, we have to make wise choices tonight, tomorrow and this week as we prepare to go on the road to play another conference game."
Freeze is very excited about the direction of his program in his first year.
"I feel very blessed to be a part of this team, this university, these players and this coaching staff," Freeze said. "We love one another, and these young men are playing extremely hard right now."
The Sun Belt Conference has two guaranteed bowl tie-ins, the New Orleans Bowl and the Go Daddy Bowl in Mobile Alabama. This year the New Orleans Bowl isn't required to take the Sun Belt Champion, they have first choice in the selection process.
Freeze feels comfortable that the Bowl situation is in good hands. "I don't understand it all," Freeze said. "I know that Dr. Lee will do his best and fight for us for the best bowl game etc. My focus is on FAU and winning more than six ballgames."
