Christmas comes early for Red Wolves

It's almost Christmas and if you didn't know better you would think it was Christmas Eve already the way Red Wolf fans are celebrating. The Arkansas State Football program received its Christmas present early Tuesday night when Arkansas native and Auburn Offensive Coordinator Gus Malzahn signed a contract to become the next Head Football Coach for the Red Wolves.

I don't believe everyone realizes just how big a gift that the Athletic Director Dean Lee gave his fan base.

Dr. Lee has been saying for the last several months he wanted Arkansas State to become the next Boise State, meaning to be a top flight Mid-Major program, who was always competing for conference championships and always knocking on the BCS door.

This is perhaps the biggest hire ever in the school history.

The effect it will have on recruiting will be incredible. Arkansas State already has 16 commitments expect that number to increase very quickly.

The Malzahn name in the State of Arkansas will pay hugh dividends in recruiting, due to how well respected he is through out the state. Arkansas High School coaches will relate to him as one of their own.

Known as a great recruiter, he already has 16 commitments on the books from Freeze's staff. We expect him to evaluate all the commitments tape, but I would be surprised if he didn't honor all of the pledges, but only time will tell.

After a 10-2 season a lot of fans were disappointed with Hugh Freeze leaving town after just one year. As things worked out, the Malzahn name will be a much bigger splash throughout the country.

While Freeze accomplished great things in season one, this sets the foundation for Arkansas State to become the Boise State of the future.

Malzahn will most likely be surprised by the size of Jonesboro, Arkansas, it's very comparable to Auburn and several other SEC College towns.

Expect Malzahn to use a lot of the same calls and plays offensively, the offense is very similar to what Malzahn runs and a lot of the terminology won't change from what I'm hearing.

A win in the Go Daddy Bowl.com on January 8th will most likely propel Arkansas State in the top 25 for the first time since the Red Wolves joined the FBS.

Great days are ahead for this program. A big salute to Dr. Dean Lee who landed the hottest coach in the country to return to his home state to lead the Red Wolves Football team.

This isn't a home run hire, it's a Grand Slam hire.

It's a great day to be a Red Wolf.
