Arkansas High School prospects are taking notice of what's happening in Northeast Arkansas and in Jonesboro.
AStateNation.com reached out to some of Arkansas top talent to get their thoughts on the hire of Arkansas State's New Head Football Coach Gus Malzahn.
Malzahn, who is an Arkansas native, returns home to lead the Red Wolves Football program. According to a couple of recruits, his presence is causing them to to take a little closer look at ASU.
One prospect that likes the Malzahn hire at ASU is McCrory's Jemer Clark.
"It's a great hire," Clark said Thursday night. "It makes me look at them a whole lot more."
Coach Malzahn is well known with high school coaches throughout the state and plans using those connections to help keep ASU on the minds of local athletes.
"My coaches know Coach Malzahn really well," Clark said. "I really like him a lot, can't wait to meet him and get to know him."
Where does Arkansas State currently stand with Clark?
"They are definitely moving up in my book," Clark said. "They are definitely in my top 3."
Another athlete that is very familiar with Arkansas State is East Poinsett County High School athlete A.J. Turner.
Although Turner has been committed to the University of Arkansas since April, the talented athlete admitted he was impressed with the hire.
"It's going to make their program that much better," Turner said. "They are going to end up getting some big players to go there because of him."
Turner is still very committed to Arkansas but said if Coach Malzahn begins recruiting him hard things might get interesting.
"I have been committed to Arkansas for a long time, I'm very committed," Turner said. "You never know though, I look forward to meeting him."
One very long time Razorback commitment Jeremy Ward gave his thoughts on Arkansas State's new coach.
"Its an awesome hire for them," Ward said. "I can see great things happening for their program with Coach Malzahn as their coach. The hire actually surprised me."
Ward, a 6-foot-4, 275-pound offensive guard, committed to Arkansas last February and is still very committed to the Razorbacks.
