One Junior College offensive lineman appears to be close to making his choice for his final destination to play D1 Football.
Grand Rapids JC lineman DeShawn Byrd recently took an official visit to Arkansas State this past Tuesday and Wednesday, he confirmed with AStateNation Thursday afternoon he will make his final decision Sunday night around 6:00 p.m.
Byrd will take another official visit to Akron this weekend and make his decision after leaving Sunday afternoon.
According to Byrd, he had a great visit at Arkansas State the past couple of days.
"The trip went well," Byrd said. "I liked it, very nice college town with a great atmosphere."
Byrd, a 6-foot-6, 315-pound left offensive tackle, explains that the Arkansas State coaching staff wants him to come in and compete right away for a starting position.
"That's what they are telling me," Byrd said. "They say I can come in and start right away."
Byrd is impressed with the Red Wolves coaching staff, especially Gus Malzahn and offensive line coach J.B. Grimes.
"Coach Grimes has six national championships," Byrd said. "You can tell by watching one practice that he really knows his stuff."
Byrd is also familiar with what Malzahn has accomplished.
"He knows what it takes to win National Championships also," Byrd said. "Malzahn is a pretty great guy. He is a great man, we had several great conversations."
Byrd is also impressed with the current Red Wolf offensive line.
"They have a lot of potential," Byrd said. "They are building something special there."
