Gus Malzahn has promised to recruit the state of Arkansas like it has never been recruited before.
His staff hit every high school in the state of Arkansas in the first five days they were allowed out on the road, making their home state its top priority.
The AState Ambush apparently worked.
One Arkansas High School prospect picked up his first offer today from the ASU Coaching staff.
Bentonville's Linebacker Garrett Kaufman couldn't be happier.
"My first offer means a lot to me," Kaufman told AStateNation Monday evening. "I'm very excited, a little overwhelmed. It's a big relief to get that first offer, to know my football career is going to continue at the next level."
Kaufman, a 6-1, 225-pound middle linebacker, plays both offense and defense for his high school team and according to the standout athlete, that may be the case at ASU.
"They really like me a lot at middle linebacker," Kaufman said. "They also mentioned the H Back on offense."
Who says college coaches relationships with high school coaches aren't important.
"I don't know much about Gus Malzahn yet, other than the fact that some of my high school coaches are very close friends of his. They all love him and think of the world of him. That's good in my book, I really trust my coaches."
Kaufman plans on getting to know Malzahn in the future.
"He told me when I talked to him on the phone that strong morals is very important to him," Kaufman said. "To know that he cares what type of man I'm going to grow up to be is pretty special to me."
Will Kaufman make a quick decision?
"Probably not," Kaufman explained. "I want to weigh all my options. For Arkansas State to see something in my abilities mean a lot to me. Right now I'm leaning towards playing football at the next level." Kaufman is also a standout baseball player and is expected to garner some scholarships offer in that sport as well.
