When Arkansas State University Head Football Coach Gus Malzahn said when he was hired that he planned on recruiting the state of Arkansas like it had never been recruited before, apparently he mean't that.
Malzahn and his coaching staff had an unofficial visitor today on campus and it appears that the visit went well for Eldorado's Phillip Hay.
"It went great," Hay told AStateNation.com. "I got to take a good look at the campus, the academic side of things and get to know everyone a lot better."
Veteran Coach J.B. Grimes is Hay's recruiting coach and it appears that Grimes and Malzahn left an impression with the young man.
"I got the chance to visit a lot with Coach Grimes, he is a great coach and an easy person to talk to," Hay said. "I met Coach David Gunn and I got to spend a lot of time with Coach Malzahn."
What did Hay learn about Malzahn he didn't already know?
"I didn't realize how down to earth Coach Malzahn is," Hay said. "He is a great coach and a great person."
According to Hay, the talented in-state athlete is currently holding offers from Arkansas State and Navy.
Did Hay commit while on his visit?
"No I didn't commit today," Hay said. "I'm probably going to wait until the season is over to make a decision. Coach Malzahn told me that they were ready to take my commitment anytime."
Hay was impressed with Malzahn's vision for the football program in Jonesboro.
"He is going to take Arkansas State to the same level as Arkansas," Hay said. "He plans on putting ASU on that same level, so there are two Top 25 D1 schools in the state."
