Arkansas State's 2012 recruiting class consisted of seven junior college players, three of whom came from Blinn College in Brenham, Texas. In the spring, the staff extended an offer to Otis Seals, a 6-foot-5, 215-pound wide receiver, originally from the Houston area, who will be a redshirt sophomore this year at Blinn.
"Arkansas State is the only school that's offered so far," said Otis Seals. "They were impressed with my size, my ability to stretch the field, and my aggressiveness as a blocker. I haven't taken a visit yet but I spoke to my brothers about it. Eddie Porter, John Gandy, and Ishmail Hayes all told me they liked it there, so I feel pretty good about the school if three different people tell me the same thing."
The trio of Porter, Gandy, and Hayes were the Blinn players Arkansas State signed in 2012. This will be Seals third season at Blinn after playing at Westside High School in Houston where he was the starting quarterback for three seasons.
"I moved to Houston from Richmond, California to go to high school," he explained. "I had a few [college] offers but I wanted to go to Blinn. It's a rough place. Being here has taught me how to be a man, how to get through hard times, and to fight through adversity. The coaches here are the best in the country.
"As a true freshman, in 2010, I played a lot on special teams and blocked two punts. I didn't get in a lot at wide receiver. I was still learning the position. I think I had around five catches and a touchdown. Last year, I took a redshirt because my Mom passed away and I went home to be with my family. This year I've improved my route running and my ability to get open and I'm ready to be a starter."
Seals will graduate from Blinn College in December. His team, the Buccaneers, will open their season on September 1st against Butler (Kan.) Community College. The game will feature two teams ranked in the NJCAA's final top 10 a season ago. Seals will be wearing jersey No. 18 this season.
