One would think you would put up more points if you garnered over 600 yards in offense.
"You would hope you would score at least 50 points or more with that much production," Malzahn told three media members Sunday evening. "We have to do a better job scoring in the red zone, all the issues we identified by watching the tape, shows us everything is very correctable."
Arkansas State amassed 619 yards in total offense, 317 yards on the ground and 302 through the air and dominated Memphis everywhere except the scoreboard, with the Red Wolves pulling out the victory 33-28.
FOUR STARTERS MISSING ON OFFENSE
Some might think the ASU offense struggled early in the game, part of that might had to do with the fact four starters were missing in action.
"I thought Bryce did a really good job," Coach Lashlee said. "Bryce, a true freshman you don't see that at center very often. The first two games he has to go into it with a nose tackle right over his head, both time against really good players. He wasn't perfect he had a few things here and there. He had his hands full a couple of times, he fought and he is a smart kid but he graded out well with Coach Grimes. He is a kid that we trust, he battles, he is going to give you everything he's got. He is going to be a great player for us, he already is someone we are counting on."
Senior wide outs Taylor Stockemer didn't play as well as senior pass catcher Allen Muse. Stockemer out with a strained knee and Muse with personal issues. ASU was also without the services of right guard Cliff Mitchell, who is also nursing a knee injury.
"Anytime you can play without six starters and you are able to win, is a big thing," Malzahn said. "We are pleased with the guys that filled in, it will only help us down the line with other guys getting some playing experience."
True Freshman Rocky Hayes was playing defense all during fall camp, that was until last Tuesday. With the absence of some playmakers on offense, Malzahn moved Hayes over to the offensive side of the ball.
Hayes responded with four carries for 68 yards and was definitely a needed spark for the offense at certain times throughout the game.
"Rocky just had two days to prepare for this game," Malzahn said. "He really had a great game. I promise you we will find ways to get the ball in his hands more often.
