Finish strong is something that Arkansas State new Head Football Coach Bryan Harsin is still planning on doing, after signing day at ASU.
Harsin and coaching staff lost three recruits on signing day and picked up two Wednesday afternoon to bring the total signees up to 20.
How this class will define itself won't be today, it will be determined how Harsin and his coaching staff fill the remaining five spots.
Harsin spoke to the media Wednesday and it was evident that he was pleased with the hard work and effort of his coaching staff.
"It's been a fast and furious few weeks," Harsin said. "I'm very happy with this class. Today is the beginning of signing day, not the end."
Harsin admitted that the new NCAA rule of signing just 25 prospects will aid he and his staff in the next few weeks.
"We aren't finished recruiting," Harsin said. "We are very pleased with who we have signed, we feel that we filled a lot of our needs. Now we just have to keep recruiting and identify guys for the remaining spots."
Harsin and his staff had expected to sign 21 prospects today, but two commitments and one other prospect decided at the last minute to go elsewhere.
Harsin didn't hesitate to go with two other players to fill those positions, adding two late additions to the class Wednesday evening.
COMMITMENT MEANS EVERYTHING
One Arkansas State commitment got a call Wednesday morning from a Pac 12 school, but stay firmed to his pledge to Arkansas State. This prospect, who didn't want to discuss the particulars of the situation, did admit that his word means a lot to him and that he was totally sold on a being a Red Wolf, mainly due to the relationships he had built with Harsin and his staff.
"They believed in me, when no one else did," The pledge said. "I'm a true man of my word, when I commit to something, I don't take that lightly."
RECRUITING IS ALL ABOUT BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS
New Arkansas State veteran defensive line coach Steve Caldwell used some of his relationships he had built over the years in the state of Arkansas to find an answer to a need for the Red Wolves.
With only 18 letters of intent sent in, Caldwell remembered an athlete that had caught his attention while coaching at another in state school.
Arkansas State offered Jerry Moorehead, a 6-foot-4, 210 pound athlete from Camden Fairview High School. ?"I have been watching Jerry for a couple of years," Caldwell admitted. "He is a great athlete that can play a lot of different positions. Three other schools offered him today as well, he signed with us because of the relationship I had built over the years at the school."
ANOTHER LATE ADDITION
One junior college defensive end commitment opted to sign somewhere else Wednesday, leaving an opening for El Camino CC DE Jabari Mathieu, a 6-foot-3, 240 athlete.
STEAL OF THE CLASS
This honor has to go to former Cal signee Willie Fletcher.
Fletcher qualified out of high school and signed with Cal on signing day last year. He failed a course in summer school and only participated in fall camp for the Bears. He attended a junior college last semester and has enrolled in classes in Jonesboro.
Fletcher, a 6-foot-2, 180 pound corner is expected to come in and compete immediately for a starting position.
"He is a big corner with a lot of athletic ability," Harsin said. "He was a great find for our coaching staff."
HONORABLE MENTION STEAL OF THE CLASS
Those two will definitely fill a position of need for the Red Wolves.
MID TERM GUYS WHO ARE ON CAMPUS
Quarterback Chandler Rogers, offensive lineman Brennan Tutor, high school in state linebacker Garrett Kaufman and Fletcher are all enrolled in school and going through spring off season with the Red Wolves.
