Path to the Sun Belt Tournament

A year ago the Arkansas State Red Wolves baseball was catching momentum.

And it was a wave they rode to almost winning the Sun Belt Conference title and reaching the title game of the conference tournamnet, coming up six outs short of a trip to the NCAA tournament.

A year later, the Red Wolves, with six games to play, are battling for one of eight spots in the post-season tournament.

After this weekend's sweep at Louisiana-Lafayette, the Red Wolves (24-24 overall) are seventh, tied with UALR and a game ahead of Middle Tennessee. ULM is four games back and has shown nothing to make you think they will make a late run.

The good news for ASU, which has to go to second-place Troy (33-12, 17-8) this weekend is they hold the tie-breaker over ULM and Middle.

And ... they have a 3-0 advantage over UALR thanks to their sweep on the first weekend of SBC play. ASU has won 12 straight games over the Trojans, who won two of three at Florida Atlantic over the weekend.

We must add, Florida International is just a game ahead of the Red Wolves, but the Panthers own the tie-brearker vs. ASU.

Here is the remaining conference schedule for ASU, UALR and Middle.
ASU: at Troy, UALR at home.
UALR: FIU, at ASU.
Middle Tenn: ULM and Western Kentucky, both at home.
ULM: at Middle, ULL at home.

It has been a tough season for the ASU, which has not been the same team offensively since Zach George went down before conference play in the series at Sam Houston. ASU lost two of three that weekend against a quality team.

They face another strong team this weekend. And a hot team the next.

If they make it back to the conference tourney, it will not be easy
