Thomas Enjoys Visit

Micah Thomas of Vista Ridge High School in Cedar Park, Texas visited the Arkansas State campus on Friday and found more than he expected.

"It was really nice, I was impressed,'' he said. "It was a lot more than I expected. With all of the construction and stuff going on, it is was really nice.

Thomas also got another sorta surprise from the Red Wolves coaching staff when they offered him a scholarship right before hitting the field for the camp.

"I kinda thought they might offer, but I tried to stay humble and not seem big-headed,'' he said. "I was hoping they would offer."

A 6-foot-1, 240-pounder, Thomas has played defensive end for the Vista Ridge Rangers, who wear red and black, but will move to linebacker this past season.

"ASU is talking to me about playing bandit, which a defensive end that plays down and will stand up,' he said.

The Red Wolves are the latest offer. That group also includes Air Force, UTEP, Sam Houston, Navy, Cornell, Air Force, Florida Tech and Abilene Christian.

"Right now I would say Arkansas State is my favorite,'' said Thomas, who has a 3.67 grade point average. "It is down to ASU and UTEP and I really like the academics better at ASU.

Thomas, who reports a 4.65 40 and a 34.5-inch vertical jump, said he plans on making a decision before two-a-day preseason practices begin. "I just want to go ahead and get it over with."

Last season for the Rangers, he was team captain, was All-Central Texas and All-District and was honorable mention Associated Press All-State. He also was All-District as a sophomore.

"I really like rushing the quarterback, but this year I will move to linebacker and I really like being able to stand up and play,'' he said.
