Beth Smith, Executive Director of the ASU Alumni Association was a guest on today's AstAteNation Radio program on The Ticket (KNEA), and explained that the actual request from ASU to city officials has been slightly misrepresented.
"First of all, we want to make clear that the name change we're asking for is Red Wolf Boulevard, as in singular form, not plural," said Smith.
Most previous published and broadcast reports stated that ASU had requested that the busy roadway's name be changed to Red Wolves Boulevard.
"We've done a lot of research on this," said Smith, "And most streets and roads in college towns are singular, such as Volunteer Boulevard in Knoxville."
Smith also told co-hosts Randy Myers and Keith Merritt that any costs incurred to change street signage and add proposed banners along the thoroughfare would be covered by the university and not the city.
"We have marketing funds that have been earmarked for this very idea to cover those costs," she added.
"We just feel like this is a great way to show that our community and our university stands together as one,|" said Smith. "So many of our programs are growing and the Red Wolf has become a true national brand."
The next step in the process will happen next month when the City Council's Public Works Committee is formally presented with the proposal. Smith said ASU plans to have representatives on hand for that meeting, on August 6.
On another subject, Smith said her office is currently working to secure pre-game tailgating locations for ASU's football road games this fall at Auburn and Memphis, and that information will be made public soon.
Smith also said all Alumni Association-related activities for this year's October 12 homecoming game with Idaho will also be revealed soon.
Randy Myers is the co-host of AstAteNation Radio. The program airs Monday-Friday from 11-1 on The Ticket 970am/95.3fm and on the web at 953theticket.com.
