Visiting With Charles Grant

A 5-foot-11, 183-pound safety, Grant's first visit to Arkansas State last weekend made an immediate impression. "I really liked the campus,'' he said. "I felt comfortable there."

Grant made the visit to Jonesboro on Saturday. He did not participate in the Elite II camp that was held a day earlier. On Monday he made a commitment to the Red Wolves.

"I just really loved the school,'' he said. "I was very impressed with all of the new buildings and the new field house that will be built. I liked the freshmen dorm. I liked the stadium and the changes they are going to make.

"I liked seeing how the city of Jonesboro was behind the team. Seeing all the stores painted reminded me of Friday Night Lights."

For the Mesquite Skeeters Grant started at safety on the football team and ran in the sprint events for the track team. For the football team he earned first-team All-District honors and he ran a 10.97 100 meters in track.

Mesquite finished 11-1 in football, won the district title and lost to eventual state champion Allen. The track team also won the district title. Mesquite competes in the state's largest classifications.

Grant had offers from Northern Illinois, Yale, Air Force, New Mexico State, Sam Houston State and North Texas.

He said he has a 3.69 grade point average.

"It is exciting," he said. "Arkansas State was my first offer."
