Veteran Arkansas sportswriter Harry King's expectations this fall for Bryan Harsin's Red Wolf football team: "It's the first time that I think there's a legitimate reason to expect ASU to win more games than the U of A...and I know they play different schedules, and I understand the Sun Belt and the SEC and all that, but I'm just talking about sheer number of wins...for legitimate reasons, ASU should do better than Arkansas."
King also said Arkansas State's aggressive approach toward scheduling is gaining new-found respect for the program among central Arkansas-based media: "The aggressive scheduling, and the home games in Jonesboro (Missouri and Miami)...you'd have to be oblivious to anything that's going on not to notice the teams that are scheduled to come to Jonesboro the next few years. If you get those people to come to Jonesboro, that's a different kind of deal."
Former Newport High School Coach Bill Keedy is set to begin his 13th season in the broadcast booth as the color analyst for ASU football radio broadcasts with the EAB Sports Network, and is possibly as excited as he's ever been about the upcoming season: "We're gonna' have a good football team, bottom line. I'm going to be shocked if we don't win a lot of ballgames if we stay healthy."
The Red Wolf soccer team opens its 2013 season tomorrow (Friday) afternoon at the ASU Soccer Park against Southern Miss, and hopes to build on the success of last year's squad, which won a school-record 11 games. The team has been picked to finish second in this year's Sun Belt Conference race behind perennial league favorite Western Kentucky.
Senior Defender Ashley Jackson appeared on today's show and said this year's team is buying in to Coach Tafadzwa Ziyenge's blue collar approach: "Our team is very hard-working, we always have been, and especially at home. That's our home turf and we like to defend it."
Registration for this academic year's Howl's Pals booster program is now open to kids age 13 and under. Sarah Munoz of the sports marketing office said the cost for the program is $60 each and membership includes an officials membership card, T-shirt, lanyard, a drawstring bag and complimentary general admission tickets to ASU volleyball, baseball, track & field, and women's basketball, plus one ticket to the A-stAte vs. Troy home football game on Sept. 12.
Randy Myers is the co-host of AstAteNation Radio. The program airs Monday-Friday from 11-1 on The Ticket 970am/95.3fm and on the web at 953theticket.com.
