Harsin Talks About Auburn

Arkansas State head football coach Bryan Harsin subscribes to the theory that a team can actually get too jacked up for a big game, and with former ASU coach Gus Malzahn and the Auburn Tigers on the horizon this week, it's definitely a concern for the first-year A-State boss.

"Yea! You tell 'em not to peak too soon for the game. But yea...you can get geeked out," Harsin said this morning in his weekly press conference at the ASU Football Complex. "You've gotta' fall back on your training and what you did that week, and you go out there and do your job and not get caught up in the emotion of the game."

Almost to the last man, Red Wolf players have been very plain-spoken about the importance of the Auburn game to the them on personal levels. The game will not only bring about a reunion with Malzahn, but also former ASU assistants Rhett Lashlee, J.B. Grimes and David Gunn, who all three followed Malzahn to the Alabama plains.

"You can have emotion, but not get caught up in it," Harsin warned.

The A-State coach was also asked about dealing with the Auburn coaching staff's first-hand knowledge of most of his players and personnel.

"Yea, they'll know these guys. They've coached 'em, they've been around 'em. They know all the insides and outs from sitting in these rooms. But how much you can draw from that with current players...I don't know."

Harsin also acknowledged his brief personal relationship with Malzahn.

"I met him here, and I met in 2007 when he was at Tulsa. We actually did some professional development when I was at Boise, so we actually spent a day-and-a-half going over schemes and different ideas."

The two coaches are known as two of the brightest offensive minds in the college game today, and Harsin acknowledged a shared philosophy. "There's similarities in the styles of offense. I think there was when I was at Boise and he was at Tulsa," he said. "It'll be interesting to see how this game develops."

Kick-off at Jordan-Hare Stadium is Saturday night at 6:30.
