White, who now attends Paris(Texas) Junior College, was an official visitor to Arkansas State for the UAPB game on Saturday. He left town with a scholarship offer and he made a commitment to Red Wolves coach John Brady.
"I really liked it there," said White. "It was my first time there and I liked everything. I went to the football game and it was a blowout. I really liked the coaches and the players. I felt like it is a good situation for me.
"I had only seen them on TV. It was a lot bigger than I expected. I liked that. It was nice."
He is the Red Wolves' second commitment, joining 6-foot-4 senior guard Conner Kern of Pilkington, Ohio.
White, 22, played last season at Danville(Ill.) Area Community College, where he set school records for blocks in a game, season and career. He said he averaged 12 points, 10 rebounds and 4 blocks per game. He averaged 20 minutes a game.
"He is a darn good player," said Paris coach Chuck Taylor. "He tells you he is a good rebounder and good shot blocker. He is very skilled around the rim, and he can shoot from about 12 feet in. He is real good about not getting out of his range. He plays well within himself."
From Chicago , Ill. He attended high school at Iroquois West, where he did not play basketball.
"I just did not play," he said.
After graduation he was working and playing recreational basketball until a trip to The Dustbowl Basketball Tournament in Danville. Ill., an annual event that attracts college-level and post-college players in a July 4 competition.
"Some friends called me and asked me to come play with them," he said. "While I was there a coach from Danville saw me play."
Upon learning he had not enrolled in college Danville offered him a half-scholarship, where he turned in a strong performance in just his first season of basketball.
"Arkansas State is getting a good one," said Taylor. "I had two high majors (Kansas State and Iowa State) call about him last week. He has lots of offers but that is all a moot point now."
White said he transferred to Paris to improve his game against better completion and because he was offered a full scholarship. He said he plans to sign with Arkansas State in November.
