"I committed when I was a junior when Gus Malzahn was the coach,'' he said. "When he left I didn't really now coach (Bryan) Harsin so I de-committed. But I got to know him and I felt it was the place for me,"
Murphy, a 6-foot, 195-pounder, was ASU's 10th commitment. (Monday night they added No. 11, receiver Blake Mack of Lonoke.) He said the Red Wolves want him to play the slot receiver spot.
An athlete who is playing quarterback this season, Murphy is the second Alabama standout to commit to the Red Wolves, continuing a connection that has been going on between the Arkansas school and that state for almost a decade. Berry running back Terrance Hollingsworth committed in the summer.
"I know there are a lot of guys from Alabama there,'' he said. "I like that. I know some of them and I played against some others."
There are 14 players on the A-State roster from Alabama.
In two games, Murphy has led Carver to an unbeaten start. He was a guest of Auburn for the Tigers' game with the Red Wolves last Saturday.
"Yeah, I knew then that was the school I was going to commit too,'' he said. "They told me I would get a chance to play early. And I like the offense, it is similar to what we run."
For the Wolverines, he also plays some cornerback and safety. Murphy, who said he has run a 4.5 40, has scored a touchdown in each of the games.
"It does not really matter where I play," he said, "I just want to get on the field."
Murphy had offers from Troy, Western Kentucky, South Alabama, Alabama State, Jacksonville State, and others.
As a junior, Murphy caught 50 passes last season for almost 50 yards and 10 touchdowns.
This year he has moved to quarterback, a position he said he played some last season.
"We were state semifinalists (in Class 6A) last year,' he said. "This year I want to win it all."
Murphy said he visited A-State during a game last season and plans on a return visit this season.
