Isiah Jones Commits

It was an easy sell for Isiah "Hoopy" Jones, a 6-foot-4 off-guard from Odessa (Texas) College, to commit to the Arkansas State Red Wolves.

First lead recruiter and Red Wolves assistant Corey Barker was one of Jones' assistant coaches at Humble (Texas) Christian Life Academy. P.J. Hardwick, an sophomore on the A-State roster who transferred in from North Texas, was Jones' high school team at the Texas prep school.

"I really felt comfortable there," he said. "And I did not know the gym was that big and they had a nice crowd for the football game. I was somewhat surprised."

Jones spent two seasons at Alabama-Birmingham. He was ineligible his first season but played in 23 games last season for the Blazers. He averaged 11.2 minutes and 2.8 points per game with 1.5 assists per game and 1.2 rebounds.

"I was recruited there by Mike Davis," he said. "And I was going to leave after he left but I decided to stay around and see what Division I was like. I got to play a lot early but then the new coach started playing his players. I understand that. It is a business."

Jones, who is from Pulaski, Ill., found his way to Odessa because another coach (Carlos Wilson) from Christian Life is on the staff. In Illinois he attended Mound Meridian High School.

"I was first team All-State my sophomore and junior seasons," he said. "Then at Christian Life we were 39-1 and I was nominated for the McDonald's All-American game.

"I feel like I am an excellent 3-point shooter but I can also put the ball on the floor and create my own shot," he said.

Jones said he was recruited to play point guard by Davis at UAB but the Red Wolves are interested in him playing on the wing.

He said since his commitment he has cancelled visits to Oklahoma State, South Florida and St. Mary's.

Jones is A-State's fifth commitment. He joins 6-5 Frederic Dure of Sherdan (Wyo.) College, 6-9 Ronnie White of Paris (Texas) Junior College, 6-5 Adam Ward of Lee (Texas) College and 6-4 guard Connor Kern of Pickerington, Ohio on the Red Wolves' commitment list.
