Mickey Ryan on the Pink Promotion

If you read the message boards on this website, it goes without saying that much of the Red Wolf fan base has concerns about the "Pink-Out" scheduled for next week's nationally-televised Sun Belt Conference showdown between Arkansas State and Louisiana-Lafayette at Liberty Bank Stadium.

The promotion is part of a national campaign to raise breast cancer awareness, and is being co-sponsored by St. Bernard's Healthcare and Holt AgriBusiness. The first 6,000 fans through the gates of "The Vault" will be given free pink rally towels to use at the game, but some fans of the program have expressed concerns about how it'll play before an ESPN2 audience watching on TV.

The subject came up today on The Ticket's 'AstAteNation Radio' program, and elicited a call to show hosts Randy Myers and Keith Merritt from ASU Associate Athletic Director Mickey Ryan.

"Look, as long as you show up, you wear whatever you want to wear. If you want to wear pink to show solidarity, that's great. But if you don't, we're not gonna' be upset with you. We just want you to come!", said Ryan.

Ryan went on to say that ASU officials are hopeful that those who choose not to wear pink to the game will instead wear the traditional red, because of the theory that red and pink will blend well on TV.

"Just wear red...we'd be happy to have you out there in red, or pink, or black, or whatever you want to wear, we're happy to have you."

Ryan went on to say that in the wake of the "pink-out" controversy, he hopes fans don't lose sight of the real objective on Tuesday night.

"This is for first place in the Sun Belt against a very good UL-L team that A-state's beat twice in a row, and you know they've got this game circled," he stated.

Several fans have contacted the athletic department about their concerns regarding the promotion, according to Ryan, to which he said "This is a cause that our coaches believe in, our players believe in it, and we as a university absolutely believe in it," but..."Don't get vexed! We're asking people, if not pink, then wear red."

Randy Myers is the co-host of AstAteNation Radio. The program airs Monday-Friday from 11-1 on The Ticket 970am/95.3fm and on the web at 953theticket.com.
