First Reaction: ASU 42 ULM 14

Picking up from the second half last week at Mobile, the Arkansas State Red Wolves crushed Louisiana-Monroe 42-14 Saturday night at Malone Stadium. The victory gives ASU 10 straight road victories in Sun Belt Conference play.

It was not that close. Arkansas State (5-4, 3-1) dominated the game, winning all phases.

The Red Wolves finished with 494 yards offense and ran 16 more plays than ULM (5-5. 3-2) and ruled the time of possession 35:43 to 24:17.

The two ULM scoring drives came on a long-pass play and a drive before the half that tied the game at 14-14.

In the second half, the Red Wolves blocked two kicks and intercepted Kolton Browning twice.

The outcome snapped ULM's 3-game winning streak and was the fourth straight by ASU over the Warhawks.

The difference: ULM had no answers for ASU's defense. The Warhawks scored on a 59-yard pass and on a drive just before halftime that was sparked by Browing's running.

The much heralded Browning was harassed all night and finished 17 of 37 for 191 yards and two interceptions. He did run for 55 yards but had 17 yards in losses.

Sterling Young and Artez Brown had the interceptions. Both led to scores.

Ultimate Makeover: QB Adam Kennedy is not the most graceful runner in Red Wolves' history but he turned in a career night with 102 yards on 22 carries. He also scored twice.

And … he can still throw. He completed 16 of 23 passes for 235 yards and a touchdown.

Since Kennedy started running the ball in the second half against South Alabama, the Red Wolves' offense has come to life.

So very special: What can you say about the special teams. Two blocked kicks – a field goal by Ryan Carrethers and a punt by LaAngelo Allbright. J.D. McKissic had a 50-yard kickoff return and three of the Red Wolves' five punts landed inside the 20.

As far as kickoffs, Brock Barnhill had tackles on four of the kickoffs. Four times ASU stopped the kickoff returner inside the 20 – the 19, 11, 12 and 13.

Defensive numbers: From the tackle chart, Q. Lee led with 7, 4 solos, and Chris Stone had five, including a sack and a tackle for loss. Charleston Girley, Darrius Rosser, Brock Barnhill and Frankie Jackson had four tackles each. ULM had just 137 yards rushing.

The crowd: The attendance was announced at 13,427.

Running strong: The Red Wolves finished with 259 yards rushing. Kennedy had 102, Michael Gordon 72 yards on 17 carries and three touchdowns and Sirgregory Thornton also had 72 carries on 17 yards. McKissic had one carry for 15 yards.

More Flash: To with his 72 yards rushing and caught two passes for 59 yards, one of them a 55-yard screen pass for a TD.

The streak: With the victory, ASU's streaks of road conference victories is now at 10.

Up next: The Red Wolves return home on Saturday for their first Sun Belt Conference meeting with Texas State. The Bobcats are 6-3 on the season. Texas State is 2-2 in league play.
