"Oh yeah, I have a lot of family in Arkansas and they are all wanting me to come to Arkansas State,'' said Beard, a 6-foot-4, 270-pound tackle from Waco (Texas) Midway High School. "We have a house in Hot Springs and we are up there and we go up there a lot."
Beard, who has committed to Toldeo, is making an official visit to the A-State campus this weekend. He also has a visit scheduled for Purdue .
"I'm just taking a look around to see the program, tour the campus, see the town and see what it is all about and if it would be a good fit," he said.
He added he has not de-committed from Toledo, he just wants to make some visits to compare.
The Red Wolves offered right before the GoDaddy Bowl. He reported his offer on Twitter.
"It was great," he said. "I was surprised. I had about 60 new followers who all came out of nowhere. It was crazy."
New Mexico State, Central Arkansas, North Texas, UL-Monroe and SMU also offered scholarships.
"Purdue has not offered me,'' he said. "They just started talking to me a couple of weeks ago. I am going to go up and there and see what it is like.
"After that I will come back I will evaluate everything and make a decision."
Beard's mother went to high school in Malvern and attended the University of Central Arkansas before transferring to SMU. He is looking forward to his first trip to Jonesboro.
He has played all three positions on the offensive line but said the Red Wolves are looking at him as a tackle.
"I saw the GoDaddy Bowl and I was very impressed with the team," he said. "They have a lot of good size and a lot of speed. They are a big, strong team. The talent level is pretty good. I have seen Baylor a lot and they looked as big as Baylor."
Beard said he plans on majoring in political science.
