RYAN CARRETHERS

Nose Guard/Defensive Tackle

Arkansas State University Red Wolves

#98

6:01.2-337

Nashville, Tennessee

Brentwood Academy

OVERVIEW

After producing just average performances playing strong-side defensive tackle, Carrethers found "his calling" as a nose guard last season. The position usually requires that player to occupy multiple blockers and clog the inside rush lanes while others around him are freed up to make plays.

Carrethers accomplished the task of taking on multiple blockers, but still managed to record a rarity, as he led the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision interior linemen with 93 tackles in 2013, as he also finished second on the team with eight tackles behind the line of scrimmage.

The position change highlighted his run stuffing ability, as Carrethers is a stout defender who plays with a strong base. He penetrates into the backfield with quickness and with his previous experience at other positions in the trenches, he can lines up at three- and five-technique spots, thanks to his ability to stack-shed inside or outside.

Carrethers gets past reach blocks on inside runs with quick feet and strength to keep blockers on his shoulder. He usually keeps his head up to find the ball and while he lacks acceleration to keep outside containment as a five-technique, he is consistent defeating cut blocks with his hands.

The nose guard is not elite in his first step, but has enough to be a penetrating run-stopper inside. Ball carriers feel every bit of his strength when he tackles them, and blockers are bruised up with his punching and swiping throughout the game. His ability to play multiple positions not only comes from his quick feet, but also his strength.

Carrethers lands a big punch into the chest of his man, swipes with aggression to move the blocker aside and uses his low center of gravity to his advantage, getting leverage to stack one-on-one and shed to either direction when playing two-gap at nose guard. He senses zone blocks, using the blockers' inertia vs. them with a strong push to get into the backfield. He also demonstrates the ability to anchor well vs. single and double blocks, making it difficult for him to be moved once he anchors.

The All-State and All-Williamson County selection left Brentwood Academy in 2009, joining the Arkansas State scout team. In 2010, he appeared in ten games, but was listed third on the depth chart at both tackle positions, managing only six tackles for the season. He started six of the thirteen games he appeared in as a sophomore, delivering 29 tackles with three stops-for-loss from the strong-side tackle slot.

Carrethers became a full-time starter in 2012, earning second-team All-Sub Belt Conference honors. In thirteen contests, he produced 68 tackles that included 3.5 stops behind the line of scrimmage. When he returned to campus for 2013 fall drills with an additional twenty pounds of bulk, the now 330-pound senior was moved to nose guard. He captured first-team All-Sub Belt honors, leading the team with four sacks among his eight stops-for-loss.
