Carrethers Selection Makes It Eight Years

With the selection of Ryan Carrethers, Arkansas State's streak of players drafted in the NFL goes to eight.

Arkansas State's streak, which started with fullback Oren O'Neal in 2007, is tied for third longest among the so-called "Group of Five" schools. The Group of Five, is made up of the Sun Belt, Mid-American, Mountain West, American, and Conference USA.

Fresno State leads the Group of Five with at least one player drafted each of the past 14 years. Following Fresno State is Central Florida with a player selected in each of the past nine drafts.

Arkansas State is tied with UConn, as each as had a player drafted in the past eight drafts. Cincinnati had been tied going into this year but had no players taken in the 2014 draft.

Behind AState and UConn are Boise State and SMU who have now had a player drafted each of the past five drafts. Incoming Sun Belt member Appalachian State had been tied with two but did not have a player taken this year.

Marshall, Rice, Utah State, and San Diego State ran their streaks to four straight years, while Florida International fell out of a tie with those schools when no player was selected.

AState's streak tops SEC members Kentucky, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, and Vanderbilt. It also is longer than eight of the ten members of the Big XII topping Texas, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, TCU, Baylor, Kansas, Iowa State, and West Virginia. In the Pac-12 Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, Washington and Washington State have shorter streaks than AState.

Some other programs of note that ranked behind Arkansas State are Syracuse,North Carolina, Pittsburgh, Maryland, Georgia Tech and others.

A-State's streak began with O'Neal, drafted in the sixth round by the Oakland Raidersin 2007. That was followed by safety Tyrell Johnson, second round by the Minnesota Vikings, then in 2009 the Pittsburgh Steelers selected tight end David Johnson in the seventh round, and in 2010 Alex Carrington was a third-round pick of the Buffalo Bills. They were followed by tackle Derek Newton, seventh by the Houston Texans, linebacker DeMario Davis third to the New York Jets in 2012 and Don Jones going to the Miami Dolphins in the seventh round a year ago. Jones was the 250th player taken out of 254.
