Week 14 Recap: End of the Regular Season

Every Sun Belt Conference team came into the final weekend of the season with a chance to make the conferences' season ending championship tournament. Only one position in the tournament was decided, the top seed, which belongs to No. 2 Louisiana Lafayette. Every other tournament position was up for grabs and every other Sun Belt team had a chance of getting into the field.

UALR takes two of three from A-State but fails to qualify for SBCT

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – UALR continued their hot close to the season but fell one win short of making the Sun Belt Conference Tournament with a series win over A-State. The Trojans took the first two games of the series but failed to pull off the sweep which kept them out of the tourney. Arkansas State dropped to the three seed with the series loss.

Game one and two both went UALR's way as its' starting pitching effectively held the A-State offense in check. Travis McDonald and Sam Thoele combined to hold the Red Wolves to four earned runs over 14.1 innings of work allowing six hits and five walks with nine strikeouts. David Owen allowed a run scoring single in the second and a two-run shot to Tanner Rockwell in the fourth in game one. In game two Bradley Wallace couldn't get out of the third inning allowing four runs on five hits in the inning.

A-State's offense in game one consisted of Matt Burgess, with an RBI double and an RBI single. In game two Lucas Feddersen drew an RBI walk and Austin Baker hit an RBI double.

Game three swung A-State's way as Chandler Hawkins and Morgan Croft each threw three scoreless innings as A-State built a 5-0 lead. Stuart Levy hit an RBI single and Dustin Jones hit a sac fly in the fourth to give the Red Wolves a 2-0 lead. In the eighth, Tanner Ring hit an RBI single and Levy hit a two-run double to push A-State's lead to 5-0.

After the Trojans cut the lead to 5-1, Baker hit a two-run double in the eighth to push the lead to 7-1 as the Red Wolves avoided a sweep and practically knocked UALR from the post season on their home field.

Louisiana Lafayette Sweeps Louisiana Monroe, Monroe Qualifies for SBCT

Lafayette, La. – No. 2 Louisiana Lafayette closed out a spectacular run through the Sun Belt without a single series loss with a sweep of Louisiana Monroe this weekend at Tigue Moore Field. The Cajuns have won 15 consecutive series dating back to the final regular season series last season and are poised in the top spot for the SBCT while ULM holds the last spot.

Greg Davis led the way for the Cajuns in game one with a two-run triple and a two-run homer for a four RBI day while scoring twice and Seth Harrison scored three times on the day and hit a two-run triple as the Cajuns won 12-9. Caleb Adams also contributed three hits while Dalton Herrington paced the Warhawks with a two-run homer and two runs' scored.

In game two, Matt Plitt earned a rare five-inning save as the Cajuns to a 9-1 victory led by Ryan Leonards two runs scored and two-run single. Davis and Michael Strentz each hit a solo homer in the winning effort. Game three would take 14 innings to decide but Harrison would get a walk-off hit as the Cajuns swept with a 6-5 win. Strentz hit a solo homer in a three-hit effort. Keelin Rasch had five hits, three doubles, as ULM hit seven doubles in the loss.

UT Arlington Splits Season with Sweep of Texas State, Grabs Two Seed

ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington closed its' season out with seven straight wins with a series sweep of Texas State to earn a split of the season series with the Bobcats while grabbing second place in the SBCT. The Bobcats will hold the four seed for tournament play.

The Mavericks pulled out a slugfest in game one with an 11-7 win powered by Greg McCall's seven RBI day that included a grand slam and a two-run homer in back-to-back innings. Colby Targun homered for the Bobcats.

Games two and three both finished with the same outcome as UTA pulled out a pair of 1-0 decisions over Texas State behind Zach Thompson and Brad Vachon's back-to-back seven scoreless inning performances. Vachon struck out nine Bobcats in his outing. McCall hit an eighth inning RBI single for the win in game two while John Michael Twichell hit an RBI single in the sixth for the win in game three.

Western Kentucky Rides Solid Pitching to Series Win, Eliminated Georgia State

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Western Kentucky shut down the Georgia State offense for 26 innings in the series but the 27th inning would prove costly and would prevent a series sweep. WKU is in the five spot for the SBCT while Georgia State is eliminated.

Justin Hageman allowed a run over 6.2 innings of work and the pen closed out the final 2.1 innings scoreless as the Hilltoppers pull out a 10-1 win over the Panthers. Ryan Church and Anderson Miller each had three hits while Church scored three times and Miller drove in three RBI as Regan Flaherty had a four RBI day.

Game two would have a similar pitching storyline as Josh Bartley threw 5.1 innings without an unearned run and the pen didn't allow another run over the final 3.2 innings as WKU won 2-1. Diedrick hit a solo home run in the third while Cody Wofford hit the game winning single in the seventh and Ian Tompkins grabbed his 14th save on the season in the win.

The Hilltoppers and Panthers took a 2-2 game into the ninth in game three before Georgia State's Chad Prain hit a three-run double to take a 5-2 lead. WKU cut the lead to one before Kevin Burgee got a groundout to end the game and notch his eighth save on the year. Flaherty homered in the losing effort.

Troy Takes Series Win Over South Alabama, Both Qualify for SBCT

TROY, Ala. – Troy took games one and two from South Alabama before dropping the series finale. Troy is the six seed in the tourney while South Alabama is the seven seed.

Trevin Hall hit a two-run double and a solo home run in his first two at bats as Troy built an early lead but would have to hold off a comeback to take a 6-5 series opening win. Nick Masonia added a solo homer on a night when Shane McCain wasn't sharp, allowing four earned runs of 6.1 innings pitched.

Tanner Hicks allowed three runs over 7.2 innings pitched as Troy took game two 7-3 over the Jaguars. The Trojans scored four runs in the eighth inning led by Matthew Howard's two-run double to secure the win as part of his three-run, two RBI day.
