By The Numbers: Offensive Scoring Efficiency

In looking at how effective an offense is there are a lot of commonly used measures. Points per game, total offense, and we recently looked at how fast plays were run.

In this article we will look at much offensive effort is required to score seven points. We break down the last four seasons of the Sun Belt and for added perspective, the four years Blake Anderson served as offensive coordinator at Southern Miss and North Carolina.

Scoring efficiency as listed in the following tables is the number of plays run divided by points scored, the final column of each table is that efficiency number multiplied by seven since the ultimate goal of most offensive possessions is to score seven points.

The numbers are obviously not a full reflection since the defense and special teams can not only score, they can provide the offense with a short field to make scoring easier.

Arkansas State did not lead the conference in scoring efficiency in any of the four seasons. UL Lafayette led the league in scoring efficiency in 2013, 2012, and 2011, while Troy led in 2010. The 2013 Cajuns were the only scoring efficiency leader to finish in first but no leader finished worse than third.

The seasons Anderson was offensive coordinator his least efficient team out-performed all but four Sun Belt squads of the past four years.
