Paul Myerberg Talks More AState

A few weeks ago, USA Today sports columnist Paul Myerberg began ranking the nation's 128 FBS college football teams as they head into the 2014 season. Arkansas State's Red Wolves surfaced Wednesday in the publication as the #63 team in the pre-season outlook.

Myerberg's article offers perhaps one of the best ever in-depth looks at the A-State program from a national perspective.

"On Arkansas don't get to just mail in a preview of the team that's won three straight conference titles. A good program, a good coach I think, a good team that's definitely in the top half of the country and a team that I think's definitely going to rival ULL for the Sun Belt title," Myerberg said Wednesday afternoon on AstAteNation Radio on The Ticket.

Myerberg's story also credits the university's leadership for having the foresight to find and hire up and coming coaches that have brought success to the program, and he explained further on Wednesday's show.

"Making four good hires in your career usually is pretty good. If you do that four times and you're doing a job for 20 years, you're usually feeling pretty good about yourself. We're at the stage now where if (Blake) Anderson works, that's four great hires in a row. I don't think there's gonna' be another program in the country that can really match that...even the big boys."

As far as his opinion of personnel for the 2014 version of the Red Wolves, Myerberg is particularly impressed with the defense's back seven.

"That's a great group. If you go back from (Qushon) Lee, to (Rocky) Hayes, to (Sterling) Young...these guys I think, without much exaggeration, of those seven starters...I wouldn't really be surprised if five of them earned all Sun Belt honors."

When asked about Coach Blake Anderson's reputation as an offensive mastermind, Myerberg likened the new Red Wolf boss to his immediate predecessor.

"I think he has a very similar reputation as that of Bryan Harsin coming in. He has a certain style." He added, "If you work under Larry Fedora, you learn a thing or two. And I think he's a smart guy offensively who needs to prove himself as a head coach and a CEO."

As impressed as Myerberg appears to be with the Red Wolves, he sees them chasing UL-L for the league title.

"I think right now that's just a really safe bet. The Cajuns look really good...dangerously good."
