McGehee Transfers to AState

Austin McGehee said once he got to Purdue everything changed.

“I was basically miserable,’’ he said. “I did not consider everything when I committed (June 30, 2013) and when I got there I saw the negatives. “So I asked for my release and sent paperwork to Arkansas and Arkansas State. The Arkansas State coaches jumped on it because they had found out Paul Jones was not coming back. “Everything just fell into place.” On Tuesday night, McGehee, who played his freshmen and sophomore seasons at Star City and moved to Pine Bluff for his junior and senior years, announced via twitter he, was transferring to Arkansas State. “We are hoping I will be eligible this season,’’ he said. “We have some paperwork to file. The coaches feel like I will be eligible. If not I will redshirt and play next year. I am happy to be a Red Wolf.” McGehee, who is originally from El Dorado, was All-Arkansas kicker by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. “I will mainly be there to punt, and maybe kickoff,’’ said McGehee. “My future is as a punter. I told my high school coaches I did not want to play a position, just wanted to kick. It worked out well for me.” Out of high school he was offered by Houston while Arkansas and Alabama also flirted, but did not offer. “I committed so early a lot of coaches didn’t recruit me,” he said.
