Wand 19th Commit

When asked how tall he was, Edmond (Okla.) Memorial senior Warren Wand laughed.

“I have a lot of fun with that,’’ said the senior running back who committed to Arkansas State on Sunday.

For the record, Wand, one of the top running backs in Oklahoma, said he is between 5-foot-5 and 5-6. Right now he weighs around 175 but expects to be back around 180 by the time Memorial starts its season on Sept. 4.

“I’ve been sick a little and lost a little weight, but I will be ready by the time the season rolls around,’’ he said.

Wand had offers from Southern Mississippi and New Mexico.

“I have not been able to get to Jonesboro yet,’’ he said. “Every time I tried to work it out something came up. I plan on getting up there for a game this fall. We have a couple of Thursday game so I am hoping that I can work something out then.”

While he has not been on campus, Wand has experienced the Red Wolves’ coaching staff first hand.

“They came over in the spring and that is when I was offered,’’ he said. “I was able to go to one of the camps in the Dallas area and was able to work with them. I really like the coaching staff. I wanted to see how they interacted with the players and I liked the coaching staff a lot.”

Memorial is Class 6A, Division I, the largest in Oklahoma. He is ranked No. 11 on The Oklahoman’s Super 30.

“It is by far the toughest division in the state,’’ he said. “It is the big schools. I think we are in line to have a big season.”

Wand ran for 1,769 yards and 15 touchdowns last season. As a sophomore he had 1,812 yards and 15 touchdowns. He also started as a freshman.

“That was a tough year, a big adjustment,’’ he said.

He also runs track, running the springs and the long jump. He has a best of 22.

“I’m excited,’’ he said. “I feel good about my decision."

He is the Red Wolves' 19 commitment this season.
