First Look at ULM

This is a little different UL-Monroe team coming to Jonesboro Saturday for a 6 p.m. kickoff at Centennial Bank Stadium vs. Arkansas State.

Kolton Browning is gone. And that loss changed the team.

“We are a lot more traditional,’’ said ULM coach Todd Berry. “Kolton was better at playing like he was in the backyard, scrambling around. That is what he did best so we let him do that.

“This year’s team is more on defense and kicking. Most of our defensive players are back but now they are a junior- and senior –dominated squad. We also have a great punter. I know it is not as exciting for our fans, but it is what works best.”

ULM is first in the Sun Belt in total defense, first in quarterback sacks, third in scoring defense, fourth in punting, and is tied for second in turnover margin.

Records: ULM 3-1, 2-0 in Sun Belt. The Warhawks have been playing it close, winning 22-20 over Troy, 38-31 over Idaho and 17-10 vs. Wake Forest. The Warhawks’ only loss was 31-0 at LSU, which was their only road game.

Common foes: None.

Series history: Arkansas State leads 21-14 and has won four straight, five of six and nine of last 12.

Coach Berry on the Red Wolves: “We got a team this week that is just amazing what they’ve done. It’s remarkable that they’ve gone through as many transitions as they have and to be still as competitive as they are. It’s a really good football team. Coach Anderson has done a great job with them. When you start to think in terms of four head coaches, new offensive systems, new defensive systems, it’s amazing. They’ve played very good football.

J.D. McKissic at receiver is somebody that you have to be majorly concerned about as a proven player and athletic guy. (Fredi) Knighten at quarterback has done a great job. He’s a different style of quarterback that can beat you with his feet and arm. They’ve got some guys that can impact the game dramatically and there playing well. They’ve got to be excited about this being there first conference game as well as homecoming. Our players are excited about getting back on the road. Sometimes we’re more adjusted to playing on the road than at home, quite honestly, since we’ve played so much on the road in the past. We know we need a great effort this week in order to have success.”
