A Different January for AState

Big recruiting weekends are no longer just about the coaches hosting prospects, they are about the atmosphere Jonesboro creates. From the painted windows and signs, to car flags flying, it all sets the tone for what playing at AState is like. This weekend will be unique. While there will be many visitors only one has not said he plans to be a Red Wolf.

Success and having the same staff for a year has changed the recruiting calendar for Arkansas State.

Late January used to be when AState was working to grab players overlooked by others and in recent years sorting out which of the prior staff’s recruits were still interested or fit the profile of the new staff. Now AState comes into January looking to play defense keeping commitments and assessing which commitments will remain eligible, as well as spotting new opportunities.

Most of AState’s commitments will be in Jonesboro this weekend. The few missing were unable to attend for various reasons. This weekend is also an ACT testing date. Donovan Ransom will be taking the ACT this weekend and will not attend.

The only uncommitted visitor this weekend will be Hutchinson Community College OLB Darius Wright. He holds offers from Appalachian State, AState, and East Carolina.

Wright visited the Mountaineers last Saturday and will AState before visiting East Carolina the following weekend.

Hutchinson Coach Rion Rhoades told AppMania, “Physical tool-wise he’s really blessed with great speed and he’s really explosive. He definitely is aggressive and loves the contact part of it,” Rhoades says. “He does play the game a lot with a smile on his face and you know he’s having fun, but when he hits somebody it does look like he’s angry. He’s definitely physical and obviously he’s built for it.”
