Carbonell was left to watch from the sideline after he suffered a torn labrum and a fracture in the socket area.
“It was pretty severe,’’ he said. “It was a bad deal.”
After the injury Carbonell tweeted
This injury might be keeping me out the whole season but it will make me stronger mentally physically and most importantly spiritually!— Javier Carbonell (@Javicarbonell87) August 12, 2014
Carbonell, who was recently cleared to work out, has maintained his weight at around 270 pounds.
“I have done well at that,’’ he said. “Been steady.
“Now all of the trainers over here are telling me not to overdo it. The A-State coaches have always been checking on me.
“I expect to be OK and ready to go in August.”
Carbonell said he had an offer from Louisiana-Monroe before the injury and some FCS schools.
“Some other Division I schools were talking to me but after the injury everyone went away,’’ he said. “But the A-State coaches stayed in touch.”
Having been recruited by defensive line coach Brian Early, Carbonell is ready for this weekend’s official visit.
“It’s exciting,’’ he said. “I’m looking forward to it.
