Whitehaven Trio Picks Up Offers

The phone call to Memphis Whitehaven coach Rodney Saulsberry was no surprise. By the time he was off the phone with Arkansas State offensive coordinator Walt Bell, three of his Tigers had been offered scholarships by the Red Wolves.

It was the first offer for offensive tackle Delvin Salter, and one of several for defensive lineman Michael Perry and cornerback Donte Vaughn.

“I kind of expected they were going to offer those guys,’’ said Saulsberry, whose team went 13-1 last season. “I was not surprised when coach Bell called.

“And I think we have three other guys they are going to keep an eye on.”

The coach said he thinks the Red Wolves will keep tabs on running back Aryon Thompson, wide receiver Kerrick Jones and defensive back Rodney Saulsberry, Jr.

“Two of the guys have a lot of offers and I know they really liked what they saw in Delvin,’’ Saulsberry said.

Salter is 6-foot-4, 275-280 pounds according to his coach.

“He’s very athletic,’’ the coach said. “And he is big and has long arms which they like on the edge. He moves really well. We pulled a lot with him. He has great knee bend and he plays very physical.”

Salter earned All-District honors and was named the team’s top offensive lineman.

Vaughn is a 6-3, 185 pound cornerback who is high on a lot of lists.

“He’s big and he’s very athletic,’’ Saulsberry said. “Ceiling is so high with him and he will so willing to learn and always wanting to get better.”

Vaughn has two ACC offers – Miami and North Carolina – and SEC offers from Tennessee, LSU, Auburn, Mississippi and Mississippi State.

“And I think Alabama will be the next to offer,’’ he said.

The 6-foot-2, 330-pound Perry has not played for Whitehaven yet. He transferred from a charter school in Memphis for his senior season. He has 14 offers, including pair SEC members.

“He’s a very talented kid,’’ Saulsberry said. “He’s extremely quick for a man his size. He can really move.

“I’m going to try and get Michael and Delvin up there for a spring practice,’’ he said.
