Baseball Schedule Merry-Go-Round

In the space of about 24 hours, Arkansas State baseball coach Tommy Raffo pulled off his best Terry Mohajir impersonation. When he finished, the Red Wolves had seriously upgraded their baseball schedule by adding a weekend series against one of the top programs in the nation and added a home game with a Southeastern Conference school.

The Red Wolves will begin a 3-game series in Emerson, Ga., this weekend with Top 20 member Louisville, a participant in the College World Series last June, and had the Tennessee Volunteers coming to Jonesboro on April 1.

“This is not just us,’’ said Raffo. “Everyone is scrambling right now. We all need games and to get on the field. The weather has gotten us all.”

Actually the trouble with this weekend began before this weekend. A-State had originally set a home weekend series with Northern Colorado, but that school had double-booked.

“When we found about that we said the heck with that,’’ said Raffo.

A-State was able to latch on to a weekend series at Northwestern State. The Demons were set to face Creighton in a 3-game series. They were allowing A-State to come in and play each team once in a Saturday, but with a 100 percent chance of rain coming in that did not look good.

“They called and said they were obligated to play Creighton three games and kind of in a polite way told us if we found something else everything was good,’’ said Raffo. “We started calling around and looking at options. We called the Perfect Game people and they called back later and said ‘how about Louisville?’ “

The Red Wolves and Cardinals begin their series Friday morning in Emerson, Ga., at the Perfect Game complex. Two games are scheduled for Saturday.

Another one of those teams scrambling was Tennessee. The Volunteers called Raffo and said they would be willing to come to Jonesboro and play after losing a four-game home series with Rutgers this weekend because of the weather.

“That was a no-brainer,’’ said Raffo. “You get an SEC school coming to your place to play you take it.” That game will be April 1.

The Red Wolves have rescheduled their game vs. Ole Miss for Tuesday in Oxford. The home game with Southeast Missouri has been pushed back to Wednesday.
