“You could say I have a good relationship with coach Trooper Taylor, but that is not right,’’ said Hammonds, a 5-foot-11, 192-pounder who has 12 offers, including two from the SEC, 2 from the Pac-12 and two from the Big 12. “We have a great relationship.’’
Hammonds said everything about Arkansas State impressed him, the coaches, the team, the facilities and the offense.
And J.D. McKissic.
“He was really nice,’’ said Hammonds. “He told me about the offense and said he had watched my film and that I reminded him of himself when he was in high school. He said he hopes I come up there and take his place.”
McKissic, the Red Wolves’ senior A-Back, has been a regular on the All-Sun Belt Conference lists in his career. He also ranks high on the A-State and SBC career lists in several categories.
Hammonds said the Red Wolves coaches told him he was the player they wanted for the A-Back spot. A hybrid running back, slot back, wide receiver who is one of the key elements in the offense.
“I love the offense and the coaches took me into this room and showed me film about how they were going to use me,’’ he said. “I loved it. The showed me some things at practice that can help me. They really made me feel comfortable.”
Hammonds has offers from Vanderbilt, Arkansas, Oklahoma State, Arizona, Arizona State, TCU, Duke, UL-Monroe, Marshall, Tulsa and the Red Wolves.
“I am looking for a school that is the right fit; where I feel comfortable,’’ he said. “It does not have to be a school that plays in a big conference or has more prestige. I want to go to a school where I like the academics and where I fit.”
Hammonds ran for 852 yards last season and had 41 receptions for 1,172 yards. He scored 18 touchdowns and also blocked a field goal.
It was not his first visit to A-State. He attended a camp as a sophomore.
“There is a lot going on up there,’’ he said. “It is going to be really nice when it is finished.”
